Sleep issues are a serious problem that can have a significant impact on our physical and mental health. In 2018, a study conducted by the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) revealed that nearly 4 million Dutch adults aged 25 and over suffered from sleep issues. This equates to 18.7 percent of the population in this age group.
The study also found that the majority of those who experienced sleep issues (62.2 percent) were women, while the remaining 37.8 percent were men. The study also revealed that the 25-34 age group had the highest percentage of people with sleep issues (21.8 percent), while the 65-74 age group had the lowest (14.8 percent).
Examining the Extent of the Problem
The study also revealed that the prevalence of sleep issues increased with age, with the highest prevalence among those aged 45-54 (20.7 percent). The study also showed that people in the lowest income bracket (0-12,000 euros per year) had the highest rate of sleep issues (23.7 percent), while those in the highest income bracket (30,000 euros and above) had the lowest (13.4 percent).
The study also revealed that people with lower educational qualifications had higher rates of sleep issues. Those with lower educational qualifications (vocational training and lower secondary education) had a prevalence of 21.3 percent and 22.3 percent respectively, while those with higher qualifications (higher secondary education and university) had a prevalence of 17.9 percent and 15.3 percent respectively.
The study also found that people who lived in cities were more likely to suffer from sleep issues than those who lived in rural areas. The prevalence of sleep issues was 19.2 percent for those living in cities, compared to 16.6 percent for those living in rural areas.
